Women Above 35 Years Smoking 15 Or More Cigarettes A Day Cannot Use Yasmin Safely

Yasmin General Information

Generic Name: Drospirenone/Ethinyl Estradiol Tablets

Brand Name: Yasmin

It is a birth control pill formed by the combination of the female hormones Estrogen and Progesterone.

Yasmin Uses

Yasmin is used in the prevention of pregnancy. The medicine prevents ovulation, thickens the mucus in the cervix and brings changes to the lining of the uterus.

How Take Yasmin

Yasmin should be taken in the way prescribed by the doctor. Yasmin is an oral medication to be taken with or without food. If the medicine is taken during the first 24 hours of the period, there is no need for additional birth control measures. But the same would be needed if a woman starts taking Yasmin on the Sunday after her period starts for seven days. If a user is switching over to Yasmin from her previous birth control pills, then Yasmin should be taken on the day fixed for using a new packet of the previous pills. Similar timings should be maintained while taking Yasmin everyday. After taking the last pill from the pack, a new one should be immediately started the very next day. Doses should be taken everyday, not more than two hours apart. Doses should not be skipped even if the frequency of having sex is not much.

Yasmin Warnings

Pregnant women or those who are planning to become pregnant should not use this medicine. Persons with a history of blood clotting problems, certain blood vessel problems like heart attack, stroke, bleeding in the brain or breast cancer should not use this medicine. This medication is also not safe for women with heart problems, chest pain caused by angina, porphyria, migraines, uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes, vaginal or cervical cancer, growths caused by estrogen and abnormal vaginal bleeding. Women suffering from liver tumors or liver diseases, kidney diseases , adrenal disease and those who would remain confined to a bed or a chair for a prolonged period of time should also refrain from using this medication. This is not the right medication for the women above 35 years and those who smoke 15 or more cigarettes per day. This medication is not a safe pregnancy control remedy for women with swelling problems, fibrocystic breast disease, gall bladder problems, seizures, varicose veins, high lipid levels and pancreas problems.

Yasmin Missed Dose

If a woman misses one dose, then she might chose to take it as soon as possible. But she has to take the next dose at the scheduled time. This implies that she might take two doses in a single day. Missing one pill does not need a backup from any other birth control option. But if one misses more than one pill, then she might have to consult her doctor. If she is confused regarding how to tackle the missed doses, then she might consider extra methods of birth control like condoms.

Yasmin Side Effects

Yasmin, like many other hormonal birth control pills, is associated with serious side effects. Some commonly observed side effects include breast tenderness; stomach cramps or bloating; nausea; vomiting; bleeding or spotting between menstrual periods and weight gain. But severe forms of side effects have been reported in many women. These are tightness in the chest, coughing of blood, breast lump or discharge, calf pain, swelling and tenderness, missed menstrual period, persistent vaginal spotting, fainting, uneven heartbeats, symptoms of a troubled liver like dark urine, pale tools, loss of appetite and yellowing of skin and eyes, mood changes, vaginal bleeding, irritation and discharge, vision changes, dizziness and headache.

Yasmin Storage

The ideal temperature to store Yasmin is 77 degrees F or 25 degrees C. The medicine can be stored at temperatures between 15 and 30 degrees C for a short period of time. It is to be kept away from heat, light and moisture. The medication should not be stored in the bathroom and it should be kept out of reach of children and pets.

Yasmin Overdose

Overdose symptoms include severe nausea and unexplained vaginal bleeding.

Yasmin More Information

It has to be remembered that Yasmin is a birth control pill only and it does not prevent the spread of STDs including HIV and AIDS. While taking this medication, a woman needs to undergo lab tests like breast exams, pap tests, physicals and blood pressure regularly to keep away the side effects. Certain antibiotics and medicines for seizures cam make the drug ineffective, causing breakthrough bleeding and unplanned pregnancy.
