Prevacid, whose generic name is lansoprazole, is used to decrease the amount of acid produced in the stomach.
Prevacid Uses
It is used for the treatment and prevention of stomach and intestinal ulcers. The drug is also intended for the treatment of esophagitis which is damage caused to the esophagus by the stomach acid. Other conditions involving excessive acid production in the stomach like the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome are also treated by this drug.
How Take Prevacid
Each dose of Prevacid is to be taken with 8 ounces of water. Prevacid capsule should be taken before eating. It is a delayed release capsule and so it should be taken as a whole. But in case it appears to be difficult, the medicine can be taken out of the capsule and mixed with a spoonful of applesauce, pudding, yogurt, strained pears or a nutritional drink. The mixture is to be swallowed as a whole without chewing. The inner medicine can also be mixed with 2 ounces of tomato juice, apple juice and orange juice. The oral granules can be mixed with 2 tablespoons of water for drinking it directly. The dose should be taken in appropriate quantity and so additional amount of water should be poured in the same cup to take in the residue. The orally disintegrating form of Prevacid would dissolve right away after placing it inside the mouth. This orally disintegrating form can also be pushed into the mouth by means of a syringe. The 15-milligram tablet is to be placed in a 15-milliliter syringe and 10 milliliters of water should be sucked inside the syringe. The tablet should be dissolved in the water by shaking and then the syringe can be emptied inside the mouth.
Prevacid Warnings
An adjustment of dose is necessary if a user is suffering from a liver disease. Prevacid should not be taken with Sucralfate and so it is advised to allow a time gap 30 minutes between the two medications. Sucralfate decreases the body’s capability to absorb Prevacid. Phenylalanine might be present in some forms and so a doctor needs to be informed if a patient has phenylketonuria. This medication is not meant for a child younger than 1 year. The doctor should be informed whether the user is preparing to get pregnant although the drug is not known to be harmful for an unborn baby. It is also not clear whether the drug passes into the breast milk. But still, lactating mothers need to inform their doctors.

The missed dose should be taken as soon as it comes into the mind. But if the time for the next dose has already approached, then there is no need to take the missed dose. Additional medicines should not be taken to compensate for the missed doses.

The common side effects due to the intake of Prevacid include headache, diarrhea, constipation, nausea and stomach pain.
