Nasacort AQ General Information

Generic Name: triamcinolone nasal

Brand Names: Nasacort AQ

Nasacort AQ is a nasal spray that contains triamcinolone which is an adrenocortical steroid. Its purpose is to prevent the release of substances that causes inflammation like redness, itching, irritation and swelling. Nasacort AQ is used to treat nasal allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itching and runny nose that is caused by hay fever or seasonal allergies.

Nasacort AQ may also be used for other purposes not listed here.

Nasacort AQ Uses

Nasacort AQ should not be used if the patient is allergic to triamcinolone. The doctor should be told about the allergy before intended use and also about the following ailments, any one of whichthe person may be suffering from: TB; asthma; past record of glaucoma; any surgery or injury to nose and any type of infection. However, in all such cases, a dose adjustment of the medication or some spacial test for safe use of Nasacort AQ is done.

It is not known whether the medication is harmful to an unborn baby. But, before taking Nasacort AQ, the lady concerned must tell the doctor whether she is pregnant or intended to become pregnant during treatment. For nursing mothers breast feeding their child, it is necessary to tell the doctor about the status and take his concurrence before using Nasacort AQ although it is not yet known whether the medication is passinginto the breast milk or not.

Nasacort AQ can affect the growth of children. Talk to the doctor if it is felt that the child is not growing at a normal rate while using this medication.

How Take Nasacort AQ

Nasacort AQ should be used as it is prescribed. The medication should not be used in larger amount or use it for longer than recommended by the doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label. These medications comes with patient instructions for safe and effective use These instructions to be followed carefully.

Before every use, blow your nose gently to clear the nostrils

The medicine needs a little shake before the use.

The Nasacort AQ inhaler use needs the following steps:

  • Protective cap to be removed from the inhaler
  • The inhaler to be held between thumb and forefinger, the head to be tilted back a little and insert the inhaler in one nostril while holding the other nostril closed.
  • Pressdown on the canister to release the spray and gently inhale at the same time. Hold the breath for few seconds then breath out slowly through the mouth
  • The whole protective inhaler cap to be replaced
  • Clean the inhaler weekly
  • Throw the inhaler after 100 sprays

The Nasacort AQ spray may be used as follows

  • Before using the spray for the first time, prime the spray for the first time, prime the spray pump by spraying the medicine into the air and away from your face until a fine mist appears.. Prime the spray pump any time you have not used your nasal spray for longer than 14 days.
  • Hold the nasal spray with its tip pointed into one nostril and close to nose. Bend the head forward to aim the spray towards the back of your nose. Hold the other nostril closed with another finger. The spray may be pumped and sniffed gently at the same time.
  • After120 hours of spray, the bottle should be thrown even if something is still remaining in it.
  • Avoid blowing the nose for 15 minutes after the above medication.

It may take about a week's treatment to improve. Doctor should be improved if it doesn't improve after a week. There may be withdrawal symptoms when you stop this medication suddenly.Such steroids should be stopped gradually after talking to the doctor about its stoppage. Doctor may visit on a regular basis to a patient who has taken the medication for several months for checking any adverse effects of the medication. The patient should not miss such follow up visits of the doctor.

Nasacort AQ Warnings

Nasacort AQ may lower the blood cells that help your body fight infections.Avoid going near to people who are sick or have infections. Look for preventive treatment if there is exposure of chicken pox and measles. These conditions are extremely dangerous or rather fatal for people who are using steroid medicines.

Nasacort AQ Missed Dose

Missed dose as soon as remembered should be taken.But, if it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose may be skipped and the next schedule dose must be taken at the appropriate time. No extra dose to be taken to compensate the missed dose.

Nasacort AQ Side Effects

Getting emergency medical help should be of prime concern, in case of the following allergic reactions:breathing difficulty, hive, swelling of lips, tongue, face, or throat. However, medication should be stopped and the Doctor should be called at once if these serious side effects are felt:

  • Tired feeling, nausea, weakness, weight loss.
  • Chills,fever, flu symptoms
  • Easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness
  • White patches or sores inside the nose, mouth or on lips
  • Blurred vision, eye pain

There may be less serious side effects like stinging, burning or bleeding, sneezing, sore throat, watery eyes, cough, stuffy nose, headache, nausea, vomiting, unpleasant taste or smell

However, this is not a complete list of side effects and there may be others that may occur.

Nasacort AQ should be stored in room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Nasacort AQ Overdose

Seek emergency medical attention, if there is overdose intake of Nasacort AQ.

An overdose of this medication is not going to produce life threatening symptoms. But, long term use of Nasacort AQ may lead to symptoms like thinning of skin, bruising, changes in the shape or location of body fat, menstrual problems, increased acne or facial hair,loss of interest in sex or impotence.
