Mircette General Information
Generic Name: ethynyl estradiol and desogestrel
Brand Name: Mircette, Apri, Cesia, Cyclessa, Desogen, Kariva,Ortho-Cept, Reclipsen, Solia, Velivet
Mircette is used as birth control to prevent conception. It contains female hormones that prevent release of egg from an ovary. Mircette also causes changes in uterine lining and cervical mucus. It thus make harder for sperm to reach the uterus and still harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.
Mircette may also be used for other purposes not listed here.
Mircette Uses
Mircette should not be used by a lady who is pregnant or recently had a baby.
Mircette should not be used if the lady has the following conditions:history of stroke or blood clot; circulation problems; a hormone related cancer, abnormal vaginal bleeding; liver disease; severe high blood pressure; migraine headaches; a heart valve disorder; or a history of jaundice caused by birth control pills.
Back up birth control should be adopted when the lady first start this medication such as condoms or a spermicide. Doctor's instructions to be followed.
Before use of Mircette, the following should be discussed with the health care provider and duly complied: during pregnancy this medication not to be used; If the lady had the baby recently, she should wait for 4 weeks and 6 weeks for breast feeding mothers before she can start this medication.
Further, dose adjustment may be necessary or special tests to safely take Mircette if the lady has any of the following disorders which must be told to the doctor:angina or history of heart attack; high cholesterol; history of depression; gallbladder disease; diabetes; epilepsy or seizure; history of irregular menstrual cycle; history of fibrocystic breast disease; lumps; nodules; abnormal mammogram.
How Take Mircette
Take Mircette pills exactly the way it was prescribed for you. No larger amounts to be taken nor period of use extended. First pill to be taken on the first day of the period or on the first Sunday after the period begins (doctor's instruction to be followed). The 28 days birth control packs contain seven "reminder" pills to keep the lady on regular cycle. One pill has to be taken everyday, not more than 24 hours apart. When the pills exhaust in a pack, open another pack but there should not be any gap otherwise there is a chance of conception. In case of any surgery or bed rest on medical ground or otherwise for a short period, the lady may stop the medication as per doctor's advice but he should know that the lady is using Mircette. While the lady is using Mircette, the doctor needs to see the lady regularly. So, the lady should not miss any appointments.
Mircette Warnings
Smoking to be strictly avoided while on this medication especially if the lady is 35 years of age.The medication will not protect from sexually transmitted disease including HIV and AIDS. Use of condoms is the only remedy as a protection.
Hormones in Mircette can pass into the breast milk and harm a nursing baby. This medication also slow breast milk production.
Mircette Missed Dose
Missing a pill increases the risk of becoming pregnant.
In case one "active" pill is missed, she should take two pills when she remembers. Then take one pill every day till the pack lasts.
In case two "active" pills are missed in a row in the week one or two, take two pills per day for two days in a row. Then take one pill a day for the rest of the pack. Back up birth control is necessary for 7 days following the missed pills.
In case two "active" pills in a row are missed in week 3, or miss three pills in a row during any of the first 3 weeks, rest of the pack to be thrown and start a new pack on the same day if the lady is a Day 1 starter. For a Sunday starter, keep taking a pill every day until Sunday and on Sunday throw the entire pack and start a new pack on that day itself.
In case you miss three "active" tablets in a row during any of the first 3 weeks, throw out the rest of the pack and start a new pack on the same day if she is a Day 1 starter, and if she is a Sunday starter keep taking a pill everyday until Sunday. On Sunday, throw out the rest of the pack and start a new one on that day.
In case you miss any reminder pills, throw them away and go on taking one pill a day until the pack exhausts. It is not necessary to have any back up birth control if reminder pills are missed on its day.
Mircette Side Effects
Emergency medical help to be requested in case of the following allergic reactions:breathing difficulty, hive, swelling of lips, tongue, face, or throat. However, medication should be stopped and the Doctor should be called at once if the lady has any of these serious side effects::
- Sudden numbness and weakness
- Sudden headache
- Chest pain or heavy feeling, nausea, sweating
- Severe migraine headache
- Nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools
- Swelling of hands, legs, breast lump and symptoms of depression
There may be less serious side effects like mild nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps, breastpain, darkening of facial skin, hair growth, loss of scalp hair, vaginal itching or discharge, change in menstrual cycle, headache, nervousness, dizziness.
However, this is not a complete list of side effects and there may be others that may occur.

Mircette should be stored in room temperature away from moisture and heat.
