Gris-PEG (griseofulvin) is used to treat fungal infections for the skin, hair, and nails. It is specially used to treat infections like jock itch, barber's itch, and athlete's foot. Although Gris-PEG is similar to an antibiotic, treatment of fungal infections is at its forte.
Gris-PEG (griseofulvin) may also be used to treat other infections or purposes other than what is mentioned here.
Gris-PEG Uses
The most important point to be remembered in the use of Gris-PEG is that a person being treated by it should take the full prescribed quota of the medication irrespective of the fact that the symptoms might improve before the infection is completely treated. However, prolonged sunlight exposure must be avoided. This medication may increase sensitivity to sunlight and severe burning may occur.
One cannot take this medication if he the following conditions:
- If he had earlier experiencedallergic reactions to it
- If he has liver disease
- If he has porphyria
He who has any of the aforesaid conditions must talk to the doctor before taking this medication.
Griseofulvin falls in the FDA pregnancy category C. That signifies that it is not known whether griseofulvin will harm any unborn baby. In some rare cases, griseofulvin usehas been associated with conjoined twins. This medication should not be taken by any pregnant lady without doctor's approval. Also, it is not known whether griseofulvin is capable of passing into the breast milk or not. The lady who is breast feeding her baby must first talk to the doctor before starting this medication. Another most important point to note about this medication is -a person should not try to father a child during treatment with griseofulvin and six months following the therapy since griseofulvin may affect the sperm and still worse as it may affect even sperm production.
How Take Gris-PEG
Take the medication as directed by the doctor. If the instructions are not understood, it should be cleared either from the doctor or from the pharmacist or nurse. Each dose should be taken with a full glass of water. Doctor may advice to take the medicine with a fatty meal so that its absorption in the body become easy. Even if it feels better, the medication must be completed as prescribed. Shaking the suspension properly is a must before measuring a dose. To ensure a correct dose, the liquid form of griseofulvin must be measured with a dose measuring spoon or cup.
Gris-PEG Warnings
Persons undergoing thetreatment must avoid prolonged sunlight. Greseofulvin increases one's sensitivity to sunlight that may cause severe burning. Sunscreen and protective clothing must be used when exposure to sunlight is unavoidable. Alcohol and greseofulvin combination is bad and may cause flushing and may also cause faster heart rate. Alcoholconsumption must be restricted if not avoided during taking this medication.
Gris-PEG Missed Dose
The missed dose should be taken as soon as remembered. Rest of the day's doses should be taken at evenly spaced timing schedule unless the doctor recommends otherwise.
Gris-PEG Side Effects
The use of griseofulvin should be stopped and it will be necessary to seek medical attention if the patient experiences side reactions like breathing difficulties, closing of throat or choking, swelling of lips, tongue or face and hives. In case of other less serious side effects, griseofulvin should be taken uninterrupted but the doctor should be notified if the patient is experiencing -nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, white patches in the mouth, headache, dizziness or tiredness, insomnia, confusion, numbness, or tingling in hands or arms, menstrual irregularities.
