Elidel General Information
Generic Name: pimecrolimus topical
Brand Name: Elidel
Elidel is al immunosuppressant and marketed as a cream and contains pimecrolimus. Elidel is used to treat severe atopic dermatitis when other medication fails or not so successful. It works by controlling the body's immune system to help slow down the growth of dermatitis on the skin which is known as eczema.
Elidel may also be used for purposes other than those listed here.
Elidel Uses
Elidel should not be used with a child less than 2 years of age. Elidel should only be used on skin exactly as prescribed by the doctor.Larger doses not be used nor longer period than what is recommended by the doctor. Elidel is for short term use only. Pregnant and breast feeding ladies must tell the doctor before using this medication. Before using Elidel, doctor should be told if the patient has
- Skin cancer or skin infection includingherpes or chicken pox
- Aweak immune system, kidney disease, swelling, redness, or irritation of larger areas of skin
In case the patient is having any of these disease, he will not be able to use Elidel, or dose adjustment has to be made or special tests undertaken for safe use of Elidel.
How Take Elidel
Use Elidel for skin medication only. Quantity of the dose and period of the treatment should be as per the doctor's guidance. This medication should not be used on a child of less than 2years of age. Elidel use should be stopped once the symptoms have cleared up unless the doctor has said otherwise. Hands should be washed with water before or after use of Elidel unless the hand itself is under medication. Elidel should be used on the skin area identified with atopic dermatitis. The skin area should be clean and dry before application. Little amount of Elidel cream needed to apply a thin layer to the skin to be used. Gentle rubbing is necessary. Treated skin should not be bandaged. After applying Elidel, bathing, swimming should be avoided for retaining the medicinal cream on the skin. After the application of Elidel, a moisturizing cream or lotion may be used to prevent the skin from getting dry. Doctor should be informed if the skin condition does not improve after 6 weeks.
Elidel Warnings
Elidel can lower the blood cells that help the body fight infection. That make the body more prone to any infection and fall sick easily. This medication is also harmful to unborn baby. Pregnant lady and a lady breast feeding her baby, should not take this medication unless told otherwise by the doctor.
Elidel Missed Dose
Missed dose as soon as it is remembered, shouldbe taken.But, if it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose may be skipped and the next schedule dose must be taken. No extra dose to be taken to compensate the missed dose.
Elidel Side Effects
Emergency medical help must be sought in case of the following allergic reactions are noticed or felt: breathing difficulty, hive, swelling of lips, tongue, face, or throat.
Use of Elidel should be stopped and the Doctor called if the patient has
- Worsened symptoms
- Signs of skin infections (redness, swelling, itching or oozing)
- Swollen glands or fever, chills, body aches and flu
Use of Elidel to be continued but talk to the doctor if the patient has the following less serious side effects: burning, stinging, tingling or soreness of treated skin, swollen hair follicles, acne or warts, upset stomach, muscle pain, headache, runny or stuffy nose.
Side effects not listed here may also occur. Doctor must be informed about any unusual bothersome side effect.
Elidel Storage Advice
Elidel should be stored at room temperature and it should not be freezed. The cap on the cream tube.must be kept duly.
Elidel Overdose
Seek medical attention if it is surmise that too much of the medicine has been taken. However, Elidel does notcause any overdose symptoms.
