Bentyl General Information

Generic Name: dicyclomine

Brand Name: Bentyl

Generic name of Bentyl is dicyclomine that relieves spasms of the muscles in the stomach and intestines by blocking the actions of some chemicals in the body. The most important use of dicyclomine is to treat irritable bowl syndrome. It may also be used for other purposes not listed here. One most important information about Bentyl is that it can cause side effects that may impair the thinking process of an individual. That is why one who is undergoing the treatment with Bentyl, should be careful in doing any act like driving that requires high degree of alertness

and awakening. Alcohol should be strictly avoided during this period. Otherwise, it can increase some of the side effects of dicyclomine. Another important aspect of dicyclomine is it decreases sweating that may lead to heat stroke in hot weather or during exercise seasons.

Bentyl Uses

No body should use Bentyl, if he or she is allergic to dicyclomine or having the problems in urination, blockage in digestive tract, ulcerative colitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, bad heart condition, glaucoma, or the lady patient is breast-feeding a baby. So, before taking this medication, the Doctor should be told if the patient is allergic to any particular drug or he or she has the problems like colostomy, nerve problem, kidney disease, liver disease, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disorder, high blood pressure, heart disease, hiatal hernia or enlarged prostate. In case of the existence of the above problems, the Doctor may decide to adjust the dose of the medicine or take special tests to decide how dicyclomine can be taken safely.

How Take Bentyl

Bentyl should be taken as prescribed by the Doctor and /or follow the directions on the prescription label. It should not be taken in excess or for any prolonged period whimsically. The medicine must be taken with a full glass of water. Liquid medicine to be measured with special measuring cup or spoon and not regular table spoon.

Bentyl Warnings

Antacids should not be taken while using dicyclomine. As explained above, while using Bentyl, one must be extremely careful in driving or hard physical work like exercise if not avoid doing such things.

Bentyl Missed Dose

In case a dose is missed, take the same as soon as remembered.If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, the missed dose should be skipped and the scheduled dose to be taken. One should not take two doses at a time.

Bentyl Side Effects

Go for emergency medical help if there is any sign of allergic reactions like hives, breathing problems, swelling of face, lips, tongue and throat. There may be less serious side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, headache, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, constipation, bloating, stomach pain, stuffy nose, skin rush, dry mouth, loss of appetite. However, stop the use of dicyclomine and the Doctor should be immediately called in case of serious side effects like confusion, hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behavior, uneven heart rate, less or no urination.

Bentyl Storage Advice

Bentyl should be stored in room temperature away from moisture, heat and light.

Bentyl Overdose

In case an excess dose of Bentyl has been taken,emergency medical help should be requisitioned. Symptoms of overdose of Bentyl include tingling or numbness, muscle weakness, headache, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, swallowing trouble, anxious or restlessness,tremors, sensation of ringing in the ears, fainting or seizure.
