Atarax General Information

Generic Name:Hydroxyzine capsule

Brand Name: Atarax and Vistraril

Atarax is an antihistamine that is normally used to combat symptoms of common anxiety and tension and sometimes in combination with other medications, to treat anxiety that results from physical illness. It has many beneficial effects like relieves itching from allergic reactions, can be used as a sedative, before and after general anesthesia. This drug can also be used to prevent or treat motion sickness, nausea, and vomiting related to certain conditions like traveling, after surgery. However, Atarax is not intended for long term use for more than four months. The Doctor will evaluate the prescription periodically and decide.

Atarax Uses

Atarax oral is used for treatment of the following: Anxiety, Allergic Conjunctivitis, Inflammation of the nose due to allergy, stuffy nose, runny nose, itching, hives, sneezing, nausea, vomiting. Atarax should be taken by mouth as needed, three or four times a day or as directed by the Doctor. If the medicine is taken in syrup form, the dose should be measured carefully using aspecial medication spoon or a kitchen measuring spoon. Dosage is based according to age, medical condition and response to therapy. For children, dosage is based upon the body weight. The medication should be as per the prescribed limit of quantity and time which should not be exceeded. If conditions do not improve, the Doctor should be informed.

Atarax should be taken as prescribed by the Doctor.

Atarax Warnings

Atarax should never be taken in early pregnancy or if the patient is sensitive to or ever had an allergic reaction to it. It should be ensured that the Doctor is aware of any drug reaction of the patient. Atarax increases the effects of drugs that reducesthe activity of the central nervous system. If narcotic, non-narcotic analgesics or barbiturates in combination with Atarax is taken, their dosage should be reduced. However, this medication causes drowsiness. So, driving, operating dangerous machinery or participating in hazardous sports or activity that requires full mental alertness is not recommended.

Atarax Missed Dose

If a dose is missed, take the same as soon as remembered.If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, the misseddose should be skipped and the scheduled dose to be taken. One should not take two doses at a time.

Atarax Side Effects

Side effects can never be anticipated while using Atarax. If any side effect occurs or intensity of the same increases, the Doctor should be informed. Only the concerned Doctor may decide if it is safe for the patient to continue the use of Atarax. The most common side effect of Atarax is drowsiness, is normally temporary and may disappear within a few days or when dosage is reduced. Other side effects are- dry mouth, tremors, convulsions and twitches. Some of these side effects are due to higher than recommended doses of Atarax.

Atarax Storage Advice

Atarax tablets and syrups should be stored away from heat, light and moisture.The syrup should always be maintained in a non-frozen state.

Atarax Overdose

Any medication if taken on overdose can turn serious for the patient. If at any time Atarax overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention should be sought. The most common symptom of Atarax overdose is excessive calm, blood pressure may drop but not essentially always.

Atarax More Information

Atarax should not be taken in early pregnancy. If the lady is pregnant or intend to become pregnant, she should inform the Doctor about the same before taking Atarax. Atarax may appear in breast milk and could affect a nursing baby. However, if Atarax is very essential for the lady, theDoctor may advice discontinuance of breast feeding until the treatment is completed.
