Aciphex General Information

Generic Name: rabeprazole

Brand Name: Aciphex

Aciphex is a proton pump inhibitor and has the chemical name "rabeprazole sodium". This is used for the treatment of heartburn irrespective of the time of its occurrence whether in the day time or in the night. Aciphex is also used for other symptoms associated with Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Persons with symptomatic GERD suffer from belching and regurgitation in addition to heartburn. There is another type of GERD termed as erosive GERD that causes erosion of esophagus. Earlier, Aciphex was an approved drug for the healing of erosive GERD and also for the healing of duodenal ulcers. Aciphex is also having its use for the treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions. However, since February 2002, Aciphex was used for the treatment of symptomatic GERD.

Aciphex Side Effects

During both short and long term trials, the basic chemical rabeprazole was found to have no side effects and generally well tolerated. However, trials that were conducted withAciphex 20mg, showed some side effects like headache in 2.4% patients, diarrhea and abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, constipation, anxiety, sleeplessness, vertigo., skin eruption.

Aciphex Overdose

Aciphex Uses

One Aciphex 20mg tablet daily is used for the treatment of persistent, frequent (say, two or more days in a week) heartburn and other symptoms associated with GERD for an adult. In the case of adolescents, the same dose as mentioned above may be used for similar symptoms. The Aciphex is also used for the short term (4 to 8 weeks) treatment of erosive GERD and also for healing the damage. However, Aciphex has yet to be studied for the treatment of longer period of more than 12 months.

How Take Aciphex

Before taking Aciphex, the Doctor to be informed if the patient is taking Atazanavir, Digoxin, Ketoconazole, Iron salts, and Warfarin.

Aciphex Warnings

Even if anyone is having anyone of the following then he should immediately consult the Doctor for necessary advice, guidance and treatment: heartburn two or more days in a week, if nighttime heartburn is experienced, if the relief from antacids or OTC acid blockers are providing temporary relief only, if the heartburn is more severe and occurring more frequently and other symptoms like bad taste in the mouth.

The medication to be kept out of the reach of children. It should be kept in its original container, to be stored in the room temperature and away from excess heat and moistureOut of date medicines to be thrown away but pharmacist should be consulted for the proper disposal of the medicines.

Aciphex Missed Dose

Missed dose should be taken as soon as possible. But, if it is almost the time of the next dose, then it is advisable to skip the missed zone and continue taking the next doses as per the schedule. Under no circumstances,double dose should be taken.
